Leah Warman is a professional tubist and trombonist from Maylene, Alabama. A well-rounded low brass musician capable of performing a wide variety of genres and styles, Leah has performed with musicians such as Greg Wing, Bobby Floyd, Dave Stryker, Kyle Swan, and Clark Terry and has recorded for the likes of C. Alan Publications, Tom Johnson Big Band, and for her own debut jazz trombone album, Marigold. She has performed as a finalist for the SERTEC Tuba/Euphonium quartet competition, for the Emmy-Award-winning PBS national television tribute to guitarist Wes Montgomery, in the Jack Rudin Jazz Competition, and in the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. Leah’s dedication to the mastery of both classical tuba and jazz trombone makes her a uniquely in-demand brass musician and educator.  

 

Leah received her B.M. in Tuba Performance from the University of Alabama and her Double M.M. in both Tuba Performance and Jazz Studies at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She has studied with professors Daniel Perantoni, Sergio Carolino, Wayne Wallace, Brent Wallarab and Dr. Jeremy Crawford, and has developed her teaching and performing career throughout the course of her degrees. As an educator, Leah has taught at a variety of institutions such as Interlochen Center for the Arts, Thompson High School, Roncalli High School, Alabama's Community School of Music, and her private studio.  

 

Leah is especially interested in both the history and future of women in jazz. Her research study titled "Gender Discrimination in Jazz Historiography: Women Instrumentalists Post WWII" was accepted for publication in Volume 6 of the Jazz Education Research and Practice Journal. She hopes to combine this and Marigold into a portfolio that will both educate and inspire. Her album highlights femininity in Jazz–especially her own experiences as a female jazz trombonist–and her compositions combine a variety of influences from modern jazz to her first musical inspirations like Etta James, J.J. Johnson, and Earth Wind, & Fire. Leah is an advocate and believer of being a well-rounded musician and hopes to continue contributing to her community through Jazz, Popular, and Classical music.
